Definition of Electrophoresis

Electrophoresis is the phenomenon of movement of charged particles influenced by an electric field. Charged particles dissolved or suspended in a liquid or gel will migrate when subjected to an electric field. Positive ions (cations) will move toward the cathode (negative plate); negative ions (anions) move toward the negative plate (anode).
