Angular Momentum

Definition of Angular Momentum

Angular momentum is the vector product of an object's angular velocity and moment of inertia.

L = Iω

Angular momentum can be compared to linear momentum (p=mv). However, unlike mass, moment of inertia depends on the position of the mass, the shape of the object, and the orientation of the spin.

A skater starts to spin with outstretched arms. If friction is negligile, as she brings her arms in across her body, her angular velocity ___ and her angular momentum ___ .
a. stays the same, decreases
b. increases, decreases
c. stays the same, stays the same
d. increase, stays the same
